Los Angeles homeowners don’t use their fireplaces every day. But whether you burn wood every week or once a season, creosote is building up in your flue. Animals get in through uncapped chimneys. Debris accumulates. None of it is visible from your living room.
SoCal Chimney provides certified chimney sweep and cleaning services throughout Los Angeles. Our technicians are certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), fully insured, and licensed to operate in Los Angeles County. If your chimney hasn’t been cleaned in the last 12 months, it’s overdue.
A professional chimney cleaning isn’t a quick brush and done. A thorough chimney sweep covers the entire system from firebox to cap.
When SoCal Chimney cleans your chimney, we remove creosote and soot buildup from the flue liner, clean the firebox, smoke chamber, and smoke shelf, clear any debris or animal nesting material from the flue, inspect the damper for proper operation, check the chimney cap and crown for damage, and provide a written condition report on what we found.
The full service takes between 45 minutes and two hours depending on the chimney’s condition. We use commercial-grade vacuums and drop cloths. Your living room stays clean.
Creosote is a byproduct of burning wood that even well-seasoned firewood produces. It coats the inside of the flue and, at stage three buildup, becomes a serious fire hazard. The National Fire Protection Association reports that chimney fires cause hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage each year. The majority of those fires are preventable with routine cleaning.
Beyond fire risk, a dirty chimney restricts airflow. Restricted airflow means smoke backdrafts into the house instead of venting out. If you’ve ever opened your damper and noticed a smoke smell even without a fire burning, that’s a sign of buildup or blockage that needs to be addressed.
For gas fireplace owners, the concern is different. Gas doesn’t produce creosote, but the flue and venting system still collect debris, moisture damage, and animal intrusion that affects how safely the appliance operates. Gas fireplace flues need annual inspection just like wood-burning chimneys.
The NFPA standard is clear: chimneys should be inspected at least once a year and cleaned as needed. In practice:
Wood-burning fireplace or stove — clean annually, or after every cord of wood burned if you use it heavily. If you’re running fires several times a week through winter, you may need cleaning mid-season.
Gas fireplace or insert — annual inspection is required. Cleaning frequency depends on what the inspection finds. Even if the flue looks clean, the inspection catches issues you can’t see.
Fireplace used occasionally or not at all — annual inspection still applies. Uncapped or rarely used chimneys are prime real estate for birds, squirrels, and raccoons. Animal nesting material is a fire hazard and a blockage risk.
Chimney cleaning in Los Angeles typically runs $150–$300 for a standard wood-burning fireplace. The final price depends on chimney size, level of buildup, and whether any repairs are identified during the cleaning.

Common services that come alongside a cleaning:
Most standard chimney cleanings in the LA area run $150–$300. The exact price depends on chimney size, level of buildup, and whether any issues found during cleaning require additional work. We provide a written estimate upfront.
A standard cleaning takes 45 minutes to two hours. Chimneys with heavier use or significant buildup take longer. We set arrival windows and confirm before the visit.
Yes. Gas fireplaces don’t produce creosote, but the flue and venting system still needs annual inspection and cleaning. We service all fireplace types including gas inserts, direct vent systems, and wood-burning masonry fireplaces.
An annual inspection is the most reliable way to know. Visible signs that cleaning is overdue include a smoke smell when the fireplace isn’t in use, smoke entering the room when the damper is open, black residue visible above the firebox opening, or a crackling sound inside the flue when the fireplace is running.

I had used So Cal Chimney inspection 10 years ago. But recently, we just remodeled our house and had a many decades old chimney. Tony came and inspected the chimney and told us exactly what needs to be done. He gave his expert opinion, and we planned on moving forward with repair and see what needs to be done. His quote not only was better than other contractors, but also included more work. At the end, he did what was needed for us, and on top of that, he gave us a refund of what was not needed to be done in our original agreement. Work was completed in a reasonable time frame. Will contact them again when we are ready to install the ethanol fireplace.
