Granada Hills sits just a few miles from the epicenter of the 1994 Northridge earthquake — one of the costliest natural disasters in US history. Chimney damage was among the most widespread structural effects throughout the San Fernando Valley, and many of those repairs were done hastily or not at all. Three decades later, Granada Hills chimneys are still showing the effects: mortar joints that were compromised in 1994 and never repointed, liner cracks that have been widening slowly ever since, and chimney-to-framing separations that a visual inspection from the ground won’t reveal.
Add to that the valley’s genuine temperature swings — cold enough in winter that Granada Hills residents actually use their fireplaces, hot enough in summer to accelerate thermal degradation — and a housing stock that’s predominantly original masonry from the 1950s through 1970s, and you have a neighborhood with more deferred chimney maintenance than most of Los Angeles.
SoCal Chimney provides certified chimney repair services throughout Granada Hills and the surrounding San Fernando Valley. California Contractor License 960218, CSIA-certified technicians, fully insured.
Given Granada Hills’ proximity to the Northridge epicenter and ongoing seismic activity from the San Andreas and associated fault systems, seismic damage assessment is one of the most important chimney services we provide in this area. Ground movement causes chimney structures to separate from home framing, develop internal liner cracks, and shift in ways that aren’t visible from the exterior. A Level 2 camera inspection is the only way to assess the flue interior for seismic damage. We stabilize separating structures, reline compromised flues, and rebuild chimney sections where movement has gone beyond repair. Written documentation is provided for insurance purposes.
Granada Hills’ combination of hot summers, cool winters, and periodic seismic activity is hard on chimney crowns. Thermal cycling expands and contracts the crown through each season while ground movement introduces stress fractures. Crowns on the area’s older homes were frequently built without proper slope or with insufficient overhang, accelerating water entry. We repair damaged crowns, rebuild improperly formed crowns from scratch, and seal with flexible elastomeric coating that accommodates the ground movement common in the San Fernando Valley.
Granada Hills was developed heavily in the 1950s and 1960s, and the original masonry chimneys on these homes have had decades of thermal cycling and seismic stress to open their mortar joints. Once mortar fails, water enters with every rain and the deterioration accelerates. We repoint deteriorated joints using materials matched to the original, repair or replace displaced and spalling brick, and rebuild sections where structural integrity has been lost.
Clay tile flue liners on older Granada Hills chimneys are frequently cracked — from seismic activity, from decades of thermal cycling, or both. A damaged liner allows combustion gases to escape into the chimney structure, creating both a fire hazard and a carbon monoxide risk. We repair damaged tile liners where targeted repair is viable and install stainless steel liner systems for chimneys requiring full relining. Relining is also required when converting a wood-burning fireplace to a gas insert.
Flashing failure is a common source of water intrusion throughout the San Fernando Valley, particularly after the thermal expansion cycles of a hot Granada Hills summer followed by the cooler, wetter winter months. We replace corroded or failed flashing, reseal existing flashing where the metal is still sound, and waterproof the surrounding masonry on all residential roofing types.
Homes built in Granada Hills through the 1970s and 1980s often have prefabricated factory-built chimney systems alongside or instead of masonry construction. These systems have a finite service life, and components installed 40 or 50 years ago — refractory panels, housing, chase covers, and liner systems — are frequently at or past end of life. We repair and replace prefabricated chimney components and handle full system replacements when individual repair is no longer practical.
The Santa Ana winds that sweep through the San Fernando Valley make a properly secured chimney cap more important in Granada Hills than in most LA neighborhoods. A missing or loose cap during a high-wind event allows embers, debris, and wind-driven rain directly into the flue. We install stainless steel and copper caps properly sized for each flue and anchored to withstand valley wind conditions.
Water staining on interior walls near the fireplace, moisture in the firebox after rain, or a musty smell from an unused chimney all point to active water intrusion. We locate the entry point and repair it at the source. We also apply professional-grade masonry waterproofing to exterior chimney surfaces to prevent future moisture penetration.
Any of these is worth a call before using the fireplace again.
SoCal Chimney serves all Granada Hills neighborhoods including Knollwood, the North Hills border area, and surrounding communities in the northwestern San Fernando Valley. We also provide chimney repair services throughout LA County:
Original masonry chimneys from this era in Granada Hills most commonly have deteriorated mortar joints, cracked clay tile liners, failed or undersized crowns, and seismic damage from the 1994 Northridge earthquake that may never have been properly repaired. A Level 2 inspection with camera documentation is the right starting point.
Yes. Seismic damage to flue liners and chimney-to-framing connections is frequently invisible from the exterior. The 1994 Northridge earthquake caused widespread internal chimney damage throughout the San Fernando Valley — including in homes where the exterior masonry appeared intact. A Level 2 camera inspection is the only way to assess the flue interior.
Yes. We repair and replace components on all prefabricated factory-built chimney systems. If the system is beyond the point where individual component repair makes sense, we handle full system replacements as well.
In most cases, yes. An inspection identifies what’s actually damaged so we address the root cause rather than a symptom. For straightforward repairs like a missing cap, inspection and repair can often happen in the same visit.
Yes — especially for prefabricated systems. Seismic activity causes shifting and separation that isn’t visible externally. A post-earthquake inspection is standard practice before resuming use of any fireplace system.
Most targeted repairs — crown work, cap replacement, flashing, repointing — are completed in a single visit of two to four hours. More extensive work like full relining or structural rebuilding may require a follow-up visit. We’ll give you a clear timeline with the written estimate.

I had used So Cal Chimney inspection 10 years ago. But recently, we just remodeled our house and had a many decades old chimney. Tony came and inspected the chimney and told us exactly what needs to be done. He gave his expert opinion, and we planned on moving forward with repair and see what needs to be done. His quote not only was better than other contractors, but also included more work. At the end, he did what was needed for us, and on top of that, he gave us a refund of what was not needed to be done in our original agreement. Work was completed in a reasonable time frame. Will contact them again when we are ready to install the ethanol fireplace.
Appointments available Monday through Saturday. Most repair calls are scheduled within 3–5 business days, with priority scheduling available for urgent situations.

Chimney Inspections and Cleanings
Annual inspections help protect against fire hazards, structural damage, and dangerous gases. We use camera-assisted scanning and precision tools to spot hidden risks like creosote buildup, liner cracks, or deteriorating masonry. Cleanings are available as part of scheduled maintenance or before winter use.
Chimney Repairs
Granada Hills properties vary from ranch-style homes to multi-level hillside estates, and so do the chimney issues we address. Our repair services cover brick repointing, flue liner replacement, flashing repairs, waterproofing, and full structural rebuilds.
