Fireplace Repairs We Handle

Gas Fireplace Repair

Gas fireplaces fail at predictable points: pilot light, thermocouple, thermopile, gas valve, igniter, or venting. We diagnose and repair all gas fireplace types throughout LA County — built-in gas fireplaces, gas inserts, and direct vent systems.

Common gas fireplace problems we fix:

  • Pilot won’t light or won’t stay lit
  • Fireplace runs but shuts off after a few minutes
  • Flame is weak, uneven, or burning yellow instead of blue
  • Remote or wall switch not responding
  • Gas odor when the unit is running (stop use immediately — call us)

Wood-Burning Fireplace Repair

Wood-burning fireplace problems typically involve the firebox, damper, flue liner, or chimney structure. We repair:

  • Cracked or spalled firebrick — the refractory panels lining the firebox deteriorate over time from heat cycling. Cracked panels need to be replaced before the fireplace is used again.
  • Damper failure — a damper that won’t open fully restricts draft and causes smoke to backdraft into the room. A damper that won’t close lets cold air in and animals enter the flue.
  • Smoke backdraft — if smoke enters the room when the fireplace is in use, the cause is usually a restricted flue, damaged liner, or undersized chimney opening relative to the firebox.
  • Flue liner repair — cracked or deteriorated clay tile liners allow heat and combustion gases to reach surrounding combustible materials. We reline damaged flues with stainless steel liner systems.
  • Crown and cap repair — a cracked crown or missing cap is the most common entry point for water and animals. We repair and replace both.

Masonry Fireplace Repair

Older masonry fireplaces in LA — particularly in hillside homes near active fault zones — develop structural issues that go beyond the firebox. We handle:

  • Repointing — deteriorated mortar joints between brick courses allow water infiltration and accelerate structural decay. We repoint using materials matched to the original masonry.
  • Crown rebuild — improperly formed or cracked crowns are rebuilt from scratch with correct slope and overhang.
  • Flashing repair — the chimney-to-roof seal is a recurring source of water intrusion, particularly on steep-pitch roofs common in the Hollywood Hills and canyon neighborhoods.
  • Seismic damage repair — chimney-to-framing separation and internal liner cracking from earthquake activity often isn’t visible without a Level 2 camera inspection. We assess and stabilize affected structures.

How Much Does Fireplace Repair Cost in Los Angeles?

Fireplace repair costs in LA vary depending on what’s failed and the fireplace type:

  • Gas fireplace repair: $150–$600 for most component repairs (thermocouple, igniter, gas valve, burner)
  • Wood-burning firebox repair: $200–$800 depending on extent of firebrick replacement needed
  • Damper repair or replacement: $150–$400
  • Flue relining: $1,500–$4,000 depending on flue length and liner type
  • Crown repair or rebuild: $200–$600
  • Masonry repointing: varies by scope

We provide a written estimate before any work begins. Diagnostic visit fees are applied toward the repair cost when you proceed with the work.

Is Your Fireplace Safe to Use?

If you’re unsure whether your fireplace is safe, don’t use it until it’s been inspected. Signs that your fireplace needs attention before the next use:

  • Visible cracks in the firebox or surrounding masonry
  • Smoke entering the room when the damper is open
  • A persistent smoke or gas smell when the fireplace isn’t in use
  • The fireplace hasn’t been inspected in over a year
  • You’ve recently purchased the home and don’t know the service history

A chimney inspection identifies what’s actually wrong before it becomes a safety issue. For wood-burning systems, annual chimney cleaning removes creosote buildup that’s the primary cause of chimney fires.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my fireplace needs repair?

The clearest signs are smoke entering the room during use, a gas or smoke smell when the fireplace isn’t running, visible cracks in the firebox panels or surrounding masonry, a pilot that won’t stay lit, or a damper that doesn’t open or close fully. If in doubt, have it inspected before using it.

Can you repair any brand of gas fireplace?

Yes. We work on all major gas fireplace brands including Heatilator, Heat & Glo, Regency, Majestic, Napoleon, Valor, and others. For less common manufacturers, we confirm parts availability before the visit.

How long does a fireplace repair take?

Most repairs are completed in a single visit of one to two hours. Structural masonry repairs and flue relining jobs take longer and may require a follow-up visit. We give you a timeline at diagnosis.

Do you repair electric fireplaces?

We specialize in gas and wood-burning fireplaces and masonry chimney systems. For electric fireplace repair, contact the manufacturer or an appliance repair technician.

Do you offer same-week appointments?

Yes. Most appointments are scheduled within 3–5 business days. We serve customers Monday through Saturday.

I had used So Cal Chimney inspection 10 years ago. But recently, we just remodeled our house and had a many decades old chimney. Tony came and inspected the chimney and told us exactly what needs to be done. He gave his expert opinion, and we planned on moving forward with repair and see what needs to be done. His quote not only was better than other contractors, but also included more work. At the end, he did what was needed for us, and on top of that, he gave us a refund of what was not needed to be done in our original agreement. Work was completed in a reasonable time frame. Will contact them again when we are ready to install the ethanol fireplace.
