When a gas fireplace stops working, the cause is usually one of a handful of known failure points — pilot light, thermocouple, gas valve, igniter, or venting. SoCal Chimney diagnoses and repairs all gas fireplace types throughout Los Angeles County, including built-in gas fireplaces, gas inserts, and direct vent systems.
Tony Hopkins has been servicing gas fireplaces in LA for over 27 years. Every repair visit includes a full system check so nothing gets missed. Most repairs are completed in a single visit.
Most gas fireplace repairs in LA fall between $150 and $450, depending on the component that needs attention. Basic fixes like replacing a thermocouple or cleaning an igniter usually cost less than fully replacing a gas valve or comprehensively servicing a burner.
You’ll always get a clear diagnosis and price before any work begins. We don’t do surprises.
A failed gas valve is less common than thermocouple failure but does occur in older units. Symptoms include a fireplace that won’t produce a flame even with a functioning pilot, or one that runs erratically. Gas valve work involves the gas supply line and requires a licensed technician — this is not a DIY repair.
Electronic igniters — piezo or spark igniters — wear out over time and can also fail from moisture intrusion. If you’re clicking the igniter and getting no spark, or a spark that isn’t reaching the pilot, we’ll test and replace the igniter assembly.
Uneven flame patterns, flames that burn orange or yellow instead of blue, or visible soot accumulation on the logs or glass are signs the burner needs cleaning or adjustment. Burner ports clog with dust and debris, particularly in fireplaces that sit unused for months at a time. We clean and rebalance burners and replace log sets and media when they’ve deteriorated.
A pilot light that won’t ignite or won’t stay lit is the most common gas fireplace complaint we receive. In most cases, the cause is one of three things: a dirty or misaligned thermocouple, a weak thermopile that isn’t generating enough voltage to hold the gas valve open, or a clogged pilot orifice restricting gas flow.
If your pilot lights but goes out as soon as you release the control knob, that’s a thermocouple issue. If it won’t light at all, start with the orifice and igniter. We diagnose on-site and carry the common replacement parts.
The thermocouple is a safety sensor that tells the gas valve the pilot is lit. When it weakens or fails, the valve closes automatically — which is the correct safety response, but it means your fireplace won’t run. Thermopiles serve a similar function in millivolt systems that don’t use standing pilots.
Both are straightforward replacements when the correct part is matched to the system. We test output voltage on-site to confirm the diagnosis before replacing anything.
Gas fireplaces vent differently depending on type — B-vent systems use the existing masonry flue, direct vent systems pull combustion air from outside and exhaust directly through the wall, and vent-free units don’t use a flue at all. Venting problems show up as odors, incomplete combustion, or the unit shutting off on the high-limit safety switch.
We inspect and repair venting on all gas fireplace configurations. For B-vent systems that share the masonry flue, we check the flue liner condition as part of the service.
Fireplace remotes and wall thermostats that stop responding are usually a receiver, battery, or wiring issue rather than a problem with the fireplace itself. We test the full control circuit and replace receivers and wiring as needed.
Gas inserts are retrofit units installed into an existing masonry firebox opening. They use all the same components as freestanding gas fireplaces but accessing them for repair requires removing or partially extracting the insert. We work on gas inserts from all major manufacturers.

I had used So Cal Chimney inspection 10 years ago. But recently, we just remodeled our house and had a many decades old chimney. Tony came and inspected the chimney and told us exactly what needs to be done. He gave his expert opinion, and we planned on moving forward with repair and see what needs to be done. His quote not only was better than other contractors, but also included more work. At the end, he did what was needed for us, and on top of that, he gave us a refund of what was not needed to be done in our original agreement. Work was completed in a reasonable time frame. Will contact them again when we are ready to install the ethanol fireplace.
The most common causes are a failed thermocouple or thermopile, a clogged pilot orifice, a depleted battery in the wall switch or remote receiver, or a tripped high-limit safety switch. The high-limit switch trips when the unit overheats — usually from blocked venting or a dirty burner — and resets once the unit cools, but if it trips repeatedly the underlying cause needs to be fixed. We can diagnose the specific fault on-site.
It depends on the smell. A faint gas odour that clears within a minute of ignition can be normal — a small amount of unburned gas escapes before the flame establishes. A persistent gas smell with the fireplace off, or a smell of burning plastic or electrical insulation, is not normal and the fireplace should not be used until it’s inspected. If you smell gas strongly and can’t identify the source, leave the house and call SoCalGas before calling us.
A musty or dusty smell on first use after a long break is usually just accumulated dust burning off the burner and is harmless.
Most repairs take one to two hours. We diagnose on-site, confirm the fix and cost with you, then carry out the repair in the same visit when parts are available. Complex issues — gas valve replacement, venting repairs, insert liner work — may take longer or require a follow-up if a specific part needs to be ordered.
We service all major brands including Lennox, Heat & Glo, Majestic, Regency, Napoleon, Monessen, Empire, and most others. For units older than 15–20 years where parts are discontinued, we’ll tell you honestly whether repair is viable or whether replacement makes more sense.
Most repairs fall between $150 and $450. Thermocouple and igniter replacements are at the lower end. Gas valve replacement, full burner service, or venting repairs run higher. We give you a written estimate before starting work. The diagnostic visit is free.
In most cases, yes. We serve Los Angeles County and aim to schedule within 3–5 business days. For urgent situations — gas smell, unit that won’t shut off — call us directly at (818) 217-4098 and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
Orange or yellow flames in a gas fireplace usually mean incomplete combustion — the gas isn’t getting enough air, or the burner ports are partially blocked. It’s not immediately dangerous in a vented unit, but it indicates the burner needs cleaning and adjustment. Left unaddressed, incomplete combustion can lead to soot accumulation on the glass and eventually carbon deposits in the firebox. We can correct this in a standard service visit.
Yes. An annual service visit — typically scheduled in early autumn before peak use — includes cleaning the burner and ports, checking the pilot assembly and thermocouple, testing the gas valve and controls, inspecting the venting, and replacing any worn components. It’s the best way to avoid an emergency repair in December. Contact us to schedule.
